Dún Laoghaire was founded in 1816 in order to allow a major port for Dublin. Today the town is known as a beautiful seaside resort popular with locals and visitors. Dún Laoghaire town centre and seafront is less than 10 minutes drive from our hotel or a short trip on the bus.
James Joyce Tower & Museum
We highly recommend a visit to this Joycean tribute located in a stunning 19th-century Martello Tower. The tower showcases personal letters, photographs & possessions of James Joyce and is known as the location in the opening chapter of ‘Ulysses’. The tower was also said to be the authors home for one week until he had a falling out with Oliver St Gogarty who was also living there.
The Oratory of the Sacred Heart
Commissioned after the end of War World I as tribute to those who died, the oratory was beautifully decorated by Sister Concepta Lynch. Within the chapel you will find beautiful and vibrant Celtic motifs and stained-glass windows.
National Maritime Museum
Located in an old church originally built in 1987 specifically for sea faring folk, this museum is now fully converted. This remarkable building still maintains it’s traditional looks on the outside including the stained glass windows but boasts a modern museum inside. You’ll find a wide range of nautical relics on site such as a working lighthouse optic, original uniforms and a huge range of maritime artifacts. The museum also hosts exhibitions dedicated to famous sailors and explores throughout the years.
Pavilion Theatre
Make sure you check out what’s on at the Pavilion Theatre. This spot is host to major events, shows and festivals and is the centre of arts & culture in Dún Laoghaire.

Dublin Coastal Trail
Dun Laoghaire is part of the Dublin Coastal Trail. Hop on a Goat Boat Tour to explore the Bay in the East Pier, or head to the West Pier for a bit of paddleboarding.

Experience rarely seen but beautiful views of Dun Laoghaire Harbour, Dublin Bay, our coastline, biodiversity and marine life. This is a tour company ran by two knowledgeable locals and the tour holds a max of 11 people.
